Reports to: CFO & COO

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $65–70k

Position Summary:

The Controller position oversees the day-to-day responsibilities of the organization’s accounting, payroll and benefits administration functions.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate a desire to serve colleagues within and outside the organization through collection, preparation, analysis and communication of financial information relevant to operations and an ability to quickly and effectively adapt to changes in the environments in which Homes of Hope operates.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Financial Reporting

  • Develop and maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the General Ledger and ensure accurate and timely recording of transactions.
  • Preparation and/or review of appropriate General Ledger account reconciliations.
  • Oversee efficient monthly financial close process.
  • Ensure proper cash management.
  • Develop, analyze and interpret statistical and accounting information to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of organization.
  • Remain knowledgeable of and implement current and upcoming accounting principles and guidelines that could impact the organization.
  • Facilitate consistent two-way communications with Leadership Team members regarding monthly departmental financial results and present final analysis to CEO and COO monthly.
  • Provide regular financial reporting CEO and to Board Finance Committee.

Budget

  • Oversee and facilitate preparation of annual operating budget. Present to CEO and COO as well as Board Finance Committee for approval.

Compliance/Governance

  • Serve as primary contact for external audit firm.
  • Supervise and review all preparatory work for annual audit(s), IRS Form 990 (i.e. tax return), and other reporting requirements, as necessary.
  • Provide required financial documents for grants.

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Facilitate weekly payroll processing through third-party organization.
  • Work with the COO to ensure personnel files remain up-to-date with respect to payroll matters.
  • Work with the COO and third-party benefits provider(s) to administer HOH’s employee benefits program.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise and provide leadership and management of the Staff Accountant.
  • Annual evaluations and bi-monthly reviews of the Staff Accountant.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications 

  • A passion and heart for the vision and mission of Homes of Hope.
  • Integrity, accountability and stewardship of resources, as demonstrated through job performance.
  • Ability to manage accounting in a complex nonprofit corporation with multiple business activities and funding sources.
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and ability to understand and prepare audit-ready financial statements and disclosures.
  • Ability to identify and develop efficient business processes that achieve maximum overall benefit for all parties involved.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work effectively in team and individual settings.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and communicate (verbally and written)complex financial data and transactions in a manner easily understood by colleagues.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to solve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Bachelor’s degree or 5+ years of related experience.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products (Excel and Word) and QuickBooks Online.
  • Experience in governmental compliance (e.g. Single Audit)

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of nonprofit financial management
  • Prior experience in real estate development accounting

Working Conditions:

Minimum 36 hours per week with 92% in office environments, 3% offsite for work-related appointments and 5% ability to work remotely.
